Now I can’t blame this issue on iPhone. Let me say this at the beginning. This issue actually started several weeks ago. I had to do a reset on my Motorola SLVR … was having problems. Went to use iSync to re-sync Address Book & iCal. But no matter what did … I could not sync my phone with iCal. Went through a whole litany of steps to try to fix it. Thought it was a problem with particular calendars in iCal. Had had that issue when I first got my SLVR. Nope … nothing I tried worked. So I just left off my calendar dates. That was a drag.

So the first time I went to sync iPhone. Imagine my surprise when iTunes got to syncing my calendar … and it choked. I was getting bizarre errors. Checking the AppleMobileSync log I was seeing this:

2007-07-06 20:45:32.263|AppleMobileSync|568:25198080|SocketStreamHandler.¬
c:_SocketLogCallback| ERROR: SocketRecv (data): error 9: Bad file descriptor
2007-07-06 20:45:32.267|AppleMobileSync|568:25198080|StreamHandler.¬
c:_ReadFunc| ERROR: Error reading data: Can’t read data
2007-07-06 20:45:32.269|AppleMobileSync|568:25198080|DeviceLinkConnection.¬
c:_DLHandlerThreadMessagePortCallback| ERROR: Could not receive message: ‘(null)’

The first thing I did was to back up my iCal, Address Book, SOHO Organizer, SOHO Notes and any other apps I knew that used sync services. I then went to Library/Application Support/Sync Services and trashed the entire folder.

To my amazement … that worked. Hey this is what they pay me the ‘big bucks’ for.

Wow. Six whole days have come & gone and I still don’t have an iPhone. But there certainly are a lot of folks out there that do have them.

One of them is a writer for MSNBC. Joe Hutsko … he’s getting lambasted in “comment hell” on his blog JOEyGADGET for writing a story about his failed iPhone and his experience getting a replacement. I wrote a little blurb yesterday about a client of mine that had ‘his precious’ overheat. Jilted Joe is a writer for a company that partners with Microsoft (MSNBC) and he wrote about his experience with AT&T and Apple support. No matter what this guy wrote short of slagging Steve Jobs or his mother personally … um … let’s cut Joey boy some slack!

Good press or bad press … this little phone that could is going to do just fine. Short of some MAJOR bonehead move on Apple’s or AT&T’s part … this is going to sell sell sell. The myth is too big. The hype too big. The momentum too big. So yeah … there are going to be folks who have a bad experience with this mythological creature. Just by the sheer numbers sold. And they might write something about it. It’s the way things work. But as Apple users if we are going to be all Pollyanna about our beloved company THAT CAN (and does) … then we are no better than those who cut Apple for no reason.

But Mr Hutsko did have a reason to tell his story, and a right to tell his story too. iPhone is too new. Those that do own it haven’t put it through its paces yet. Not in a six days time.

So let’s sit back and wait a bit. Lets sheath some of those vitriolic tongues and listen for the sweet marimba tones of your own working ringing iPhone. Or … embrace you inner curmudgeon and send everybody to voicemail! Damn them all!

We all know the iPhone has been another ‘hot’ product for Apple. From reports flying around the web, some 700,000 iPhones sold in just a few days. Pretty impressive. But we’ll leave it up to Mr Jobs to colorfully ‘interpret’ that data for us all in his next keynote … whenever that might be.

Had a client call me today to tell me how HOT his iPhone was. And I don’t mean in a Paris Hilton (retching) kind of way, but a degrees Fahrenheit kind of way. Seems he was carrying ‘his precious’ in his pocket. Now Dan’s a stylin’ kind of guy …. so I can’t imagine him wearing wool knickers, or insulated shorts even on a cool Seattle summer day. No. Just pulled it out (the iPhone that is) to make a call. Let his fingers do the dialing/tapping. Just as he was leaving a message the iPhone froze. There was the button to let him end this call … but tap tap tap as he might … nothing. So here’s Dan … expletives flying … trying to figure out how to hard reboot his iPhone. I’d hate to have been the person on the other end getting that message! =:o

Now I have to explain that I just set up Dan’s iPhone yesterday. So he’s kind of new to the iPhone experience. Hell … we all are. We’re all trying to see where the ‘Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field™’ ends & the iPhone reality begins. Up until this time Dan had been using Verizon and on his SEVENTH Treo! Let’s just say he’s not been a happy camper. So he was freaking freely when his precious day old iPhone was giving him problems.

Dan had to let himself & the iPhone cool down for 30 minutes before he could use it again. His first call was to me. Hey Joe …. where you goin’ without that iPhone in your hand … (read my other posts) No. He had to tell me his frightening iPhone related tale of woe. But hey … that’s what I’m here for.

So here I am the eStory-teller/consultant relating my first iPhone tale of woe. Well not mine … but you know what I mean. I’m working on “My So-Called Life Without iPhone • Day 5.”

More later … maybe.
